RALEIGH (AP) -- The Carolina Hurricanes are facing a team tonight that's nowhere near the playoff picture -- and hoping not to join them.
The Hurricanes are hosting the Philadelphia Flyers at the RBC Center in hopes of grabbing points and holding onto their spot in the playoff race.
The defending Stanley Cup champions are clinging to the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, leading both the New York Islanders and Toronto Maple Leafs by one point and trailing seventh-place Montreal by one. The Hurricanes gave up three goals in the third period of Tuesday's 3-to-1 loss to Atlanta.
Philadelphia has dropped three of its last four. The Flyers are coming off a 6-to-3 loss Tuesday to the NHL-leading Buffalo Sabres.
With only 40 points, Philadelphia has the league's worst record this season, although the Flyers have won three of their last four visits to Carolina.
