GREENSBORO (AP) -- Greensboro city council members have ordered the city manager to immediately find $500,000 to beef up police patrols following a recent spike in murders.
Board members voted unanimously Tuesday to make funding available to pay officers and detectives overtime and to fill vacancies in the robbery unit.
City Manager Mitchell Johnson must report back to the council by December 18.
In the first eight days of December, seven homicides were reported in Greensboro. Police said six men were shot and another man was stabbed.
Five are linked to drug or gang activity. Motives behind the other two deaths are still being investigated.
Police Chief Tim Bellamy requested the money when asked what the board could do to help.
