Panthers' defense defends offense

Story body

CHARLOTTE (AP) -- The Carolina Panthers offense has struggled under three quarterbacks since former Pro Bowl player Jake Delhomme was lost for the season in the third week of the year. But the defense is refusing to blame the team's problems on the offense. The defense was on the field for nearly 40 minutes in a 37-6 loss at Jacksonville on Sunday. It was the second time in the past three games the defense has played about twice as long as the offense. But cornerback Richard Marshall says the team is not playing well on offense, defense or on special teams. The Panthers have scored a touchdown or less six times since Delhomme went out. The team managed just ten first down and 149 total yards in Sunday's loss. The defense kept it close, with the Panthers trailing just 10-6 at the half. (Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press.
