WILMINGTON -- The holidays can also be a lonely time for seniors who don't have family and friends around. That's why a group of UNCW gerontology students delivered gift baskets to residents at the Silver Stream nursing home today. It's called the Holiday Hope Basket project. The students filled baskets with toiletries, cookies, blankets, and much more, donated by people from UNCW and the community. Hoggard High School, Carcker Barrel, and UNCW's cornerstone learning community also served as project sponsors. Project organizer Kerri Allen said, "It's very exciting. A lot of times seniors in our community are not as revered as they should be and it's just really nice to come and spend some time with them and it really means to them a lot. A lot of them don't have family and friends to be with at this time of year." The class will continue to deliver the baskets to nursing homes and individual residents homes throughout Wilmington.
