MLK celebration kick-off held in Wilmington

The kick-off to this year's Martin Luther King celebrations were held in Wilmington Monday.

Members from the MLK celebrations committee were on hand at a press conference to announce a total of eight events the community can join to remember the civil rights movement leader.

All the festivities, which take place mostly in churches, begin January 15 and run through the January 24.

Committee leader Hollis Briggs Jr. said, "We've got all the community involved and we're doing a lot of different things, but if you'll notice most of the events that we are going to be holding are in churches, the civil rights movement started in the church, and we want to try to bring it back to the church, so that's the reason why we're having a lot of events in churches."
