Local business helps disabled find work

READ MORE: Local business helps disabled find work
WILMINGTON -- One local business is changing lives by helping the disabled find work. For the first time in years Thadious Humphrey is holding down a steady job. Humphrey said, "I was going through a lot of problems and I came and I talked to Ms. Sylvia." Sylvia Amick is the director of Coastal Enterprises, a company that helps disable adults learn how to work then find employment. Amick said, "We have a lot of work for them to do to give them training before they go out into the real world on a job." Coastal Enterprises isn't just a job training center, it's a job site. Clients are trained in areas such as sewing, recycling and wood working. After learning the traits to hold down a job Coastal Enterprises may hire them full time. Humphrey said, "This company is about helping people, disabled people with all kinds of problems drugs alcohol whatever they try to bring them in here and help clean them up and get them in the work force." After training to work for one month Amick hired Humphrey full-time in their recycling center. Humphrey said, "If you need help there is help out here and vocational rehabilitation and companies like coastal enterprises they are there." While Mr. Humphrey has helped to recycle and clean up the community he's also cleaning up his life. Humphrey said, "That's all you have to do is clean your act up and give an effort." Humphrey is glad he made those changes. "Life before was going downhill," he said. "Life now is uphill and, I mean, it's good, it's steady and I love it." For more information on either getting employment help or using the services such as the recycling pick up call Coastal Enterprises at (910) 763-3424.
