Chadbourn celebrates Black History Month

CHADBOURN -- The community of Chadbourn began celebrating black history month this weekend. More than 50 people gathered to share what black history means to them on Saturday. The annual Black History Expo is part of a local celebration in Chadbourn, highlighting influential African American figures while showcasing local talent. The event featured young performers, traditional folk music and the work of local black artists. Organizers say this is one positive event where children in the area can appreciate their heritage. Angela Leach with the Black History Expo said, "They will learn a sense of pride, it helps them identify who they are, as adults we need to encourage and to enlighten them so they can grow." One folk artist could trace his ancestry all the way back to the 1700s. The event also provided health information on medical conditions that affect African-Americans and also gave people the opportunity to register to vote.
