Duplin County ushers in new firefighters

READ MORE: Duplin County ushers in new firefighters
Karen Dixon is one of many Duplin County firefighters-in-training embarking on a life-long mission. "That's my goal: to learn and be better equipped to be able to save lives," Dixon said. A group of 25 rookies were put through the rigors of a firefighter's life through the county's weekend basic training seminar. Real-life simulations of rescue missions and extensive safety training will help them get their certification. Garry Murphy of the Rose Hill Fire Department has been training rookie firefighters for years, he says his number one goal is teaching safety first. "It makes you feel good when the guys are eager and want to learn something. And hopefully we've taught them something, if nothing else hopefully we taught them safety," Murphy said. Many say after receiving their certification this will look like another day at the office.
