Community honors life of WFD Cpt. Miller

READ MORE: Community honors life of WFD Capt. Miller
WILMINGTON -- Tuesday the Wilmington community honored the life of fire Cpt. John Miller. It wasn't a day for sadness. It was more of a time to reflect on who Cpt. Miller was and what he meant to those close to him. Fire trucks lined the streets as family, friends and co-workers filed into the First Baptist Church on Market Street to show their support and remember the man who served his community. Miller worked as a Wilmington firefighter since 1990. He lost his life when his private helicopter crashed off Carolina Beach road. After the funeral people gathered at Battleship Park to honor Miller and spread his ashes in the Cape Fear River. Close friend Eddie Williams said, "It was just a tribute to John, and who he was as a person, and who his family is and who these firefighters are. We're family." Assistant Wilmington Fire Chief Frank Blackey said, "There's a lot of sense of loss and just trying to deal with that over the next several weeks, months as we move forward." Miller is survived by his wife and two daughters. There's still no word as to what caused Miller's helicopter to go down.
There are three memorial funds the community can donate to in his memory: The Muscular Dystrophy Association (in memory of John Miller) 1518 Harbor Dr. Wilmington, NC 28401 The Cape Fear Community College Foundation (in check memo put: j.millersaf.trng.cnt) 411 North Front St. Wilmington, NC 28401 The JC Miller Memorial Fund Hanover Federal Credit Union 3802 Cherry Ave. Wilmington, NC 28403
