Fire on Fifth

READ MORE:
Firefighters contained a dangerous situation on the north side of Wilmington Friday evening. Flames engulfed the house at 912 North Fifth St. in downtown Wilmington. They threatened the house next door. Thick dark smoke rose high over the north end of the city as fire crew converged on the scene. It was a scary time for neighbors. “It started sparking and missing and then the smoke came, rising up and stuff,” said Nasja Bennerman, who lives nearby. Firefighters kept the blaze from spreading. Neighbors say this isn't the first time this house has caught fire. “In the past three years that I lived on this side of town, this house has been on fire twice,” said neighbor Jessica Williams. Wilmington Battalion Chief Kevin Dudley said it took twenty minutes to contain the flames. They managed to do it without incident or injury. “We have done a primary survey of the exposure, structure and there were no injuries. No one was found,” Dudley said. Dudley said the house was vacant. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
