Wilmington Marines thank community for support

READ MORE:
Lance Cpl. John Wilson just got back from Iraq. The Ashley High School graduate spent seven long months overseas. He says it wasn't easy, but his days were often brightened by the support he got from the Wilmington community. “Every letter that they send, every package that they send, it helps out more than they know,” Wilson said. Wilson and other members of the local marine reserve unit said they often received mail from people they never met. Local children sent letters and drawings and businesses sent everything from coffee to cigars. “That really helped us,” said Wilson. “It boosted the morale, we knew things were going good back home so that was one less thing we had about in the theatre.” “I think it's important to remember that they're still there, they're still serving our country, and keep 'em in mind,” said Tim Wilson, John’s Dad. On Sunday Tim Wilson organized a bar-b-que in Riverfront Park in Leland. He wanted to thank marines for their service and the community for supporting them. “It's more difficult for them to serve now than it was in my time,” so retired Marine Colonel Pete Wallis, who attended the barbecue. “So any type of community support that rallies behind them makes it easier for them.” “It's certainly extremely important so that we perpetuate this type of service for the benefit of all.”
