Governor candidates square off in debate

READ MORE:
There are seven candidates vying for the North Carolina Governor's seat, and most of them debated last night at Cape Fear Community College in a forum sponsored by WWAY NewsChannel 3. The candidates addressed the issues of illegal immigration, the economy and our environment. All of them had ideas on how the each issue could be fixed. Those ideas swayed some voters. "I was looking at one candidate and now hearing the others, I'm still gathering my thoughts together," Barbara Fleming, a voter who attended the forum, said. "I'd hate to say one name here but who I thought I was interested in. I'm getting a different view just being here." Republicans Bill Graham, Pat McCrory, Bob Orr and Fred Smith answered questions from panelists and audience members during the forum, which you can watch Sunday at 9 a.m. on WWAY NewsChannel 3. Democrats Beverly Purdue and Richard Moore declined to attend. One Democratic candidate, Dennis Nielsen, used their absence to his advantage. Nielsen said if he's elected he will fire several leaders in state agencies and start fresh. He believes that new leadership will move North Carolina forward. In the end, however, it's the voters who have the power to choose that new leadership for North Carolina.
