Runaway Bride Should Just Runaway AgainSubmitted by Kevin Wuzzardo on Thu, 10/12/2006 - 12:41pm.It's been more than a year since Jennifer Wilbanks made international headlines as the so-called "Runaway Bride." You surely remember the story: Days before her lavish wedding to John Mason in suburban Atlanta, Wilbanks disappeared, setting off a massive search by family, friends, volunteers and law enforcement. Days later she turned up in New Mexico claiming she had been kidnapped and sexually assaulted. Later she admitted, she left because of a case of wedding stress and cold feet. You may also remember that a few months later, Wilbanks served out her community service to help repay some of the cost to taxpayers for the search by cutting grass. Well, apparently the lesson in humility just wasn't enough. Last month Wilbanks filed a lawsuit against her now ex-fiance Mason. She claims he used $500,000 a publisher paid the couple for their story to buy a house (which he later allegedly kicked Wilbanks out of) and some other stuff. Now Wilbanks wants her half of the loot and wedding presents they received before she ran away (including a washer, a dryer and a ladder) as well as another $250,000 in punitive damages. Are you kidding me? Lemme get this straight: You run away from your fiance days before your wedding, leading to a massive search on the taxpayer's dime, only to turn up after a trip to Las Vegas and New Mexico with a cock-and-bull story thus humiliating the man you claimed you loved and your entire family and his, and now you want to get paid? Am I the only one with Wilbanks' wide-eyed look of surprise on my face hearing this story? Jennifer, you're pretty lucky you didn't land in jail for what you pulled. You're also lucky at least some of your family and friends, including your fiance, until you two broke it off for good more than a year after you pulled your stunt. Now you have the gall to claim he took advantage of the power of attorney rights you granted him to negotiate the book deal because you were too medicated to do it yourself? Wow. They say money can't buy happiness or love. For Wilbanks' sake, I hope it does, because I have a feeling she's set fire to most of the bridges that were still salvageable in her life after she left in the first place.
