WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) -- As his Democratic rivals duke it out in two primaries today, John McCain will be giving a speech at North Carolina's Wake Forest University He'll be talking about the kind of judges he would nominate as president. The expected GOP nominee promises to appoint judges who are likely to limit the reach of the Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion. He says Chief Justice John Roberts and Justice Samuel Alito would be "the model" for his own nominees. McCain is reaching out to the Christian right, which has been deeply suspicious of him because he has clashed with its leaders and worked against them on issues like campaign reform. Often viewed as an independent, McCain's actual record is very conservative, particularly on social issues like abortion, gay rights and gun control. However, he said once, in 1999, that Roe v. Wade should not be overturned. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
