Property taxes, Wave Transit discussed at Wilmington City Council meeting

Several items were discussed at last night's Wilmington City Council meeting including property taxes and a possible new park. Residents wary of a tax hike made their concerns known during at the public hearing. The current property tax rate is 30 cents per $100 dollars. The city is deciding whether to add an extra 4.25 cents to the tax rate. Complicating matters is a shortfall caused by a mistake in the New Hanover County Tax Department. City Council will make a final decision on the issue next month. Council members could not come to a decision about purchasing land near Greenville Avenue to build a park. The land was appraised at $350,000 but the city wants to pay less. The council went into closed session to discuss new terms and another price. Wave transit is getting some much needed money. The council voted unanimously to give the bus line $132,000 dollars. The money will help cover Wave Transit's debt for the rest of the fiscal year.
