Anyone who has spent a lot of time in the ocean will tell you that wind, tides, and currents can turn a pleasant day trip into a nightmare in seconds.
I encourage everyone to learn and practice the survival technique known as "drownproofing." Yes, you should always have a PFD handy. If you can't swim, you should be WEARING the PFD. But in the event that you go into the water and rescue isn't close at hand, drownproofing (and the confidence it brings you) can let you survive many, many hours.
