Traffic changes in downtown Wilmington

READ MORE:
Big changes are underway in downtown Wilmington. The old Wachovia building is being demolished, and new condos are going up in its place. The project is affecting parking and traffic on parts of North Front, Princess and Water Streets. The Wachovia building is being torn down from the inside out and new condos called The View Water Street are being built in its place. The work is taking over 11 public parking spaces on North Front, Princess, and Water Street until construction is over. It also means Princess Street will only be open one way between Water and Front. Traffic will be allowed to drive away from the riverfront. One private parking lot will be closed as the construction moves closer to Water Street. The project manager said he is doing everything possible to make sure nearby businesses are not affected. Project manager John Sharkey said, "There are no big signs in front of any of the businesses. We're doing the open fence here so people can see clearly through into the businesses, and with the construction workers, a lot of positives to the hot dog stands and a lot of restaurants around here that serve lunch." The construction is scheduled to be complete by the end of 2009. Parking for the condo tenants will be under the building. Some business owners told WWAY they think the construction will hurt their business in the short term, but in the long term their business will prosper with more people living in the area.
