COLUMBIA, N.C. (AP) - A wildfire in rural eastern North Carolina has grown to more 10,000 acres and is spreading smoke and ash miles away. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service spokeswoman Bonnie Strawser said Thursday the fire is in and around Pocosin Lakes National Wildlife Refuge. She said officials can't get an exact size of the fire because smoke is so dense that pilots can't see the fire's boundaries from the air. Strawser said a voluntary evacuation has been issued for homesin parts of Tyrell County. No injuries have been reported and no structures have been damaged. Smoke and ash filled the air in Manteo, a town about 45 miles east of the fire. Strawser said one outdoor event planned in Manteo had been moved. (Copyright 2008 by The Associated Press.
