COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- South Carolina Republicans were so eager to bash Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards that they issued a statement critical of the former North Carolina senator a week before he returns to the state.
In the release today, state party Chairman Katon Dawson says the former North Carolina senator's chances in South Carolina are grim because of the state's recent election of conservative candidates.
South Carolina GOP officials say the release was supposed to be sent out to coincide with Edwards' appearance at a private fundraiser -- an event actually scheduled for March 19th.
Edwards' campaign says he was nowhere near the Palmetto State today.
Spokeswoman Kate Bedingfield says he was in Atlanta during the day and planned to spend the night in New York.
