BRUNSWICK COUNTY -- A student got pepper sprayed by a school resource officer trying to break up a fight. It happened at the Brunswick County Academy.
School officials say a male and female student got into a fight Wednesday afternoon. Five other students joined in.
The school's resource officer and another teacher then tried to break up the fight.
Brunswick County Sheriff Ron Hewett says the resource officer was forced to pepper spray one of the students, after she tried to attack one of the other fighters.
Hewett says the move was necessary at the time.
"The use of the O.C. spray actually helped stop an assault, instead of hurting the child more. So, in this case, he used good judgment. The pepper spray burned for a while, but it stopped the fight and it stopped her from hurting another child," Hewett said.
Hewett says one of the fighters, a 15-year-old female, was arrested on-site and is now facing several charges, including assault and resisting arrest.
All seven students are suspended for ten days. Two may face longer suspension.
