NHC Sheriff's Department to unveil new helicopter

The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office is gearing up to unveil its new chopper. Law enforcement helicopters are not new to the area. Wilmington and Leland police, and Pender and Brunswick County Sheriff's Offices all participate in SABLE, or Southeastern North Carolina Law Enforcement. The sheriff's department decided not to take part in the program, opting to get its own chopper instead. Despite separate programs, the WPD says its worked with the county before and will continue to in the future. SABLE chief pilot Ken Timms said, "For them to have their own aviation asset, it's a win-win situation for both of us. Like I said if we're not available and then if they're not, we could be." Operating expenses for both choppers are paid for by seized drug money.
