Update on shocking water bills

Imagine going to your mailbox to find a $3,000 water bill. It has happened to some New Hanover County residents. Yesterday we introduced you to Bob Kellum of Castle Hayne. He said he was shocked when he received his first bill from the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority. The bill was for more than $3,000, substantially more than the $15 he paid for his last water bill. He said one of his neighbors actually had a bill upwards of $8,000. Today, the Cape Fear Public Utility Authority's general manager Matt Jordan said do not worry, the high bills are a mistake. "There is a conversion and reprogramming error that occurred and affected probably 50 to 60 bills it looks like at this point. We're going back and checking those to be sure that we've got a comprehensive understanding of this and to make the correction," said Jordan. Jordan said that the utility authority is trying to determine the correct balances. The high bills have been cancelled, and will be reissued for the correct amounts.
