New Hanover County commissioners held a public hearing last night to decide whether to zone a piece of residential land for commercial use. The land is in the Tucker-Burnett subdivision, off Carolina Beach Road. Developers want to add a boat warehouse and a parking lot. Property owner Tim Ward wants to use the land as a private yacht club. He says the $10 million project would offer more water access for boaters. Some neighbors don't like that idea and made those feelings known at the county commission meeting. They are concerned about extra noise and traffic that the facility would bring to Burnett Road. Ward said, "It's already a marina and we're just trying to convert it into more like a community boating facility." Neighbor David Ward said, "We just don't want that in our neighborhood. These people have lived here thirty, forty years. There's been nothing here but this grassy field and this one house in front of this. There's never been anything here." New Hanover County commissioner's denied the rezoning request needed for the storage facility. In 1971, the land was given a special use permit that would allow developers to build a commercial marina, just not a boat storage facility.
