As the school year begins, North Carolina community colleges have record enrollment numbers. A proposed policy change could mean the classrooms will get even more crowded in the near future.
North Carolina community college leaders are considering lifting a ban on illegal immigrants at community colleges.
It's not the first time this has been discussed and students seem as divided over the issue as the state board.
The Policy Committee for the State Board of Community Colleges voted to ban illegal immigrants from the classroom last year. Since 2000 the board has changed the policy four times
“This issue has been going back and forth at the state level for several years. We'll be following the rules, whatever they may be, whenever the decision is made,” said CFCC spokesperson David Hardin.
One reason there may be so much back and forth, it's a polarizing issue, and it's always a close vote.
Now, the board is considering changes that would allow immigrants to attend the local colleges with some restrictions. All undocumented residents would need a diploma from a U.S. high school. The students would have to pay out-of-state tuition regardless of how long they've lived in North Carolina, and they would register for classes after legal residents.
But at local community colleges, finding the space for the additional students is cause for concern. “It's not only true at Cape Fear Community College, but all around the state, is that community colleges are overburdened with students,” Hardin said.
About 90 percent of classes at CFCC are at capacity thanks to record enrollment
While community colleges are already struggling to accommodate students, current students say they're not necessarily opposed to admitting undocumented students.
“It really doesn't matter, they're here to work, they're trying to make a life for themselves,” Shannon Green said.
As long as it doesn't cost legal residents a spot in the classroom. “Especially at this school right now there are so many students that are legal citizens of the US that can't get in here. It would seem kind of pointless,” said Nick Chambers.

VOTE THEM OUT!!
Illegal Immigrants in College
First of all, many of the illegal immigrants that are being considered are those that came here involuntarily. Many of them are children of immigrants and cannot help their situation.
Secondly, whether they are voted out or whether legislature votes the bill in, immigrants will not even be able to attend college because of the strict stipulations involved. They must: pay 5x more than an in state student, not be eligible for financial aid, have graduated from a US High school, and their presence must not displace any qualified U.S. Citizen or legal resident. That's a pretty high bar. I know for a fact that I could not afford CFCC if I had not had FASFA or had to pay 5x the instate amount.
Send them back, vote them out? Back to what? This is the only home many of the illegal immigrants know. They would be strangers in their own "homeland". They are Americanized, if not officially, "Americans". Have we as a population become so completely desensitized by venomous rants that pass for the "IMMIGRATION DEBATE" that we are completely and utterly incapable of showing kindness toward human beings at heart?
These kids/adults have so much potential! One person from the family may complete college and then bring in enough income to lift the whole family out of poverty! Allowing immigrants into our colleges will bring diversity and culture to our community as well as TOLERANCE from the public! If they are allowed to enroll, it should be used as a mechanism to help them (the immigrants) apply for legal residence and, citizenship.
Yes, technically, they are illegal. I am well aware of this. However, many of these illegal immigrants want to earn an education MORE than our own kids do! I am a college student and I can tell you from experience that the apathy from many of the students at CFCC is absolutely astounding! Many of the people succeeding are those that are not from this country OR have a highly collateralized background.
The goal is to lend a hand, give people the chance they deserve and ULTIMATLEY have a well rounded, educated public.
Next time, please acquire information for yourself and realize the power of your words and how they reflect upon you. If one is not into "political discussion" and do not know the whole truth of a situation, then he or she might wish to stay out of the heat of the kitchen.
