Cops find 56 pounds of pot during traffic stop

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- A traffic stop led Wilmington police to a big drug bust yesterday. After pulling over a car for routing violations, police found about 56 pounds of marijuana in plain view inside the car.

Police say the pot has a street value of about $40,000.

Melody Ann Mejia, 21, and Joel Peña, 24, both of Charlotte, are charged with trafficking in marijuana. They are both in the New Hanover County Detention Center under bonds of $300,000 and $1 million respectively.

Way to send a message

I hear anti-drug advocates claim their hard-line positions are founded on concern for our future generations and "not wanting to send the wrong message to young people" It is their best defense, since denying adults freedom of choice is pretty indefensible. I would personally like to know what kind of message you are sending when you place someone in possession of marijuana under a one million dollar bond, and then give Elisa Baker a $100,000 bond. Hmmmm, could it be that aiding in the murder and dismemberment a disabled 10 year old little girl is not NEARLY as bad as riding around with 56 pounds of plant matter in your car?
