Cruise ship visits Port City

Downtown Wilmington was paid a visit by an extra large visitor on Sunday. The “American Spirit" spent the afternoon and evening docked in the Port City.

The ship tied down just across from the courthouse on Water Street just after 1:00. Over one hundred passengers unloaded and explored downtown Wilmington throughout the day. Visits like this are a boost to our local economy.

“It’s a good thing for me,” said riverfront vendor Frank Carter. “I think it’ll be a good deal. Brings a lot of people to our city, and revenue too.”

The ship is operated by American Cruise Lines and is part of a Mid-Atlantic cruise. Before stopping in Wilmington, the Spirit docked in Charleston, SC.

This is just one of five cruise ships that will dock in Wilmington during the month of May.

What's next?

will the City and County join hands and initiate some type of dockage fee to cover budget shortfalls? Maybe 3% of the ship's value.

I wonder then how long it will take for ship operators to dock in Morhead City?

But after all, someone on one of the Councils felt it would be a good idea to allow the visitors to cover budget shortfalls. "...Let the visitors pay..." was his cry.

When will fiscal responsibility arrive?
