Dated medical supplies heading overseas to help

READ MORE:

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- New Hanover Regional Medical Center is hoping to save lives in other countries with the start of a new program. Mission Ready is a program that collects expired medical and surgical supplies that cannot be used in the US due to strict guidelines. Doctors say the materials and supplies are still fine to use, especially in places like Haiti, which is still recovering from January's devastating earthquake.

"This stuff we throw away saves lives in other countries," cardiologist Damian Brezinski said. "It's the littlest things, tube, a piece of sterile gauze, a drape you can put on the ground and perform surgery, is enough very frequently to save peoples lives."

Mission Ready is also the beneficiary of this year's Chords for a Cause concert in Wilmington. Ticket sales from the Sister Hazel concert will help pay to ship the supplies overseas countries. For more information on tickets to the show visit http://www.chordsforacause.com/.
