District Attorney Rex Gore said a Brunswick County Sheriff's deputy acted within the law when he shot and killed a man he was attempting to arrest. Alton Lawrence Walters was killed in the shooting. Authorities said Deputy Bradley Hardee was trying to arrest him during a domestic disturbance. Hardee tried using his taser on Walters, but Walters kept coming towards him. The DA said Deputy Hardee shot Walters when he was within arm's reach of the officer's gun.

Deputies are deputies for a reason

these guys are in the job they are because there is nothing else for a guy that wants to beat someone or shoot someone except the military and we all know the military has higher standards. The ones I have had the misery to come across are dumber than a box of rocks and mean as snakes.

I'm glad you have somthing else to do

for we the people sure don't need you on any law enforcement department. I come fron a three generation of law enforcement and I am very proud of that. Two of these serving in the sevice which again they put their lives on the line for people even like you. I pray each day that I will get the chance to tell my brother and son that I love them for you never know in this line of work if you will ever see or hear there voice again. I hope that with your negative attitude that when you need the law they will be there for you, of course they will ( it is there job and they CARE ) maybe that's a word you need to look up. CARE !Brotherhood of law enforcement is something you will never understand and I feel for you. This is a loving and supportive group. May God continue to be with ALL law enforcement and there family.

Deputies/Clevenative

Next next you need help from law enforcement, call some rocks or some snakes.

Your uneducated opinion is nonsense!

Quote: Clevenative (these guys are in the job they are because there is nothing else for a guy that wants to beat someone or shoot someone except the military and we all know the military has higher standards. The ones I have had the misery to come across are dumber than a box of rocks and mean as snakes.) Theses Deputies risk their lives for all of us, and they deserve respect and gratitude. Seems like you must have come across them when you where doing something you shouldn't. Yes not all Cops are good, but not all cops are bad. The Majority of law enforcement officers I have met or know, are outstanding people, and would put their life in danger for you. Deputies patrol often alone and have no backup within miles, it takes a brave person to do some of the things they have to do. A domestic violence call is unpredictable and one of the most dangerous situations a deputy has to handle often alone.

Must be because of you

No Clevenative, they are deputies to protect your sorry butt. I would be willing to bet you have quite a criminal history and that is why you are angry towards LEO's. Seek help for yourself. Quickly.

Deputy Hardee

Knowing deputy Hardee personally, there is NO DOUBT in my mind that the shooting of Mr.Walters was the last resort. I have been a law enforcement officer for 21 years and can tell you that no law enforcement officer wants this to happen.Deputy Hardee needs the steadfast support of his department and Sherriff.Mr Walters's family will be in my prayers also..

need to change training

That's great, an unarmed man gets shot in the chest and killed. So if he was unarmed why was it OK to shoot him in the chest and not in the leg? Brunswick County is like Hooterville and they give these poorly trained deputies guns and send them out to make life or death decisions. Now if the guy was about to attack with a weapon that's different.

Genius, using a firearm is

Genius, using a firearm is called Deadly Force. Officers don't shoot to injure, they shoot to kill. What else was the Deputy supposed to do? He deployed his taser, that didn't work, then the suspect reached for his gun. Is he just supposed to slap his hand and tell him no? God help you if you ever need the police for help. Officers make a decision in a fraction of a second and then people who think they know it all (you) get to spend hours and days analyzing it to see if you think they were right. Best part is, it doesn't matter what you think.

exactly what i would expect

exactly what i would expect someone to say when you are defending the sensibilities of right versus wrong. serve and protect is the moto not show up to defend. your comment shows that there is no act of compassion for human life(which we are talkin about) and you werent there either so you cant defend his actions anymore then me. judge not period and i havent but you judge all you want. if youre a deputy youre still a human first and it all sounds like a bunch of blasphemy to me. anyone with an opinion shouldnt be allowed to serve these kinds of duties because its there job and not their freedom to do as they will. thank you no further ?s people r getting angry cause they dont understand freedom from right and wrong.

Poor Comment

Quote: Guest28451 (Brunswick County is like Hooterville and they give these poorly trained deputies guns and send them out to make life or death decisions.) Deputies in NC get the same training. A deputy in Brunswick County is trained just like every other officer in the state of NC, through the State Criminal Justice Academy (BLET). Get your facts strait. The officer has a weapon on him, and if someone is coming toward you with intentions to harm you, that weapon can quickly be taken from you and used against you. The deputy has to protect himself. Quote: Guest28451 (So if he was unarmed why was it OK to shoot him in the chest and not in the leg?) The deputy was trained by the state of NC to shoot center mass. You do not shoot to mame someone in the leg. The real world isn't like TV. Shooting someone in the leg is not the best way to stop a person.

Just because someone passes

Just because someone passes BLET training does not mean they are fit to make life or death decisions. The training needs to be changed so the deputies do not lose control of the situation resulting in this outcome. If it was that bad why did he not wait for backup before trying to resolve the situation. Don't 2 officers usually show up when responding to domestic violence related calls?

Lack of Common Sense

Guest28451 your comment is fully lacking of common sense. You need to pay better attention to the details before you comment. There is not a single law enforcement agency that is trained to draw thier service weapon and shoot a person in the leg. The local, state, federal, FBI, DEA, ATF, US Secret Service, and all other law enforcement are trained to shoot center mass. Thats why they call it deadly force in the use of force training. The military training is the same. There is not a lets call a time out for a minute and think out this situation....ok I know what I am going to do, lets use the lets shootem in the leg and hope he stops use of force. Get your head out of the TV world, this is not a movie or CSI Miami. I don't care how they do it on tv, this is the real world. All the training targets I have seen only gives you points for center mass, not head, arm, hands, or legs. It's draw, point and shoot center mass in less than 2 seconds. The guy may not have been armed, but he came at Deputy Hardee agressively and tried to get his gun. Thank you Deputy Hardee for your fine service to the community and my thoughts to both famlies involved with this incident....

by the way jus because they

by the way jus because they arent trained doesnt mean they are so dumb they cant think before they act

Perhaps you should learn the law?

There is no need for an assailant to be armed or for an officer to be beaten, disarmed, and even killed with his own weapon before deadly force can be applied. The sole requirement to use deadly force is that you were in fear of death or grievous bodily injury to yourself or another person. I don't care how tough you are, there's someone out there who can clean your clock. Once you're wrestling around the floor with a suspect you've lost control of the situation and it's a toss up who's going to come out on top. Hardee used his taser but the suspect kept coming at him. It was his decision, it was a sound decision, and he had the law on his side.

Gore's Decision

For the first time in history, I agree with something Gore has done! Bradley Hardee did the right thing. I am glad to see that he has been exonerated.

Deputies

I am a 911 dispatcher and also date a deputy and I feel that Hardee done the right thing. H e may have had back up coming to him but being in the situaton he was in he had to protect his life at that time. I feel bad for both families involved however I feel as if Hardee did nothing wrong. Deputies put there lives in danger everyday whether it be a routine traffic stop or a domestic dispute call anything could happen. The vic was giving an oppuritunty to stop before it turned deadly and he didn't Hardee felt he was in danger and was so he acted on it. Thank you for serving our community Hardee my prayers are with you for I know you are having a diffuicult time. Good luck to!
