Documents released regarding Hewett subpoena

BRUNSWICK COUNTY -- Back in November NewsChannel 3 got a tip that Brunswick County Sheriff Ron Hewett ordered inmates to do yardwork in preparation for his son's wedding. Some newly released documents appear to add truth to that rumor. The documents were released Wednesday. The documents are records of the work inmates did in Shallotte, on October 18, 2007. The crews cleaned roads leading up to a house off Riverbend Drive, where Hewett's son had his wedding on October 20. Sheriff's records were subpoenaed a couple of weeks ago; they indicate that federal investigators are aware of the work order. According to Brunswick County rules, inmates can be ordered to clean roads only if it benefits the public. There's still no word on exactly what federal investigators are looking for in their investigation of the sheriff. Hewett has not commented on the investigation since it began in June.

Why attack Gause now? He is a good man also. If all you can gripe about is him playing golf and driving his patrol car to functions, then you are attacking the chief for no reason. He is on call 24/7 which means he MUST be ready to leave whatever it is he is doing at any given time and respond. I am sure the chief has been called out on holidays, birthdays, middle of the night, and in the middle of dinner, so if the chief wishes to play golf durring a week day, I think he diserves it and should not be verbally attacked by doing so. It seems all anyone wants to do on this site is bash law enforcement with out knowing the correct facts. Use some common sense when posting boneheaded comments, they only make one sound arrogant.

Surely, there HAS to be more to this investigation than using inmates to clean a public road. Am I the only one embarrassed that tax dollars are being spent on such a farce? I have built a career on people relocating to our area. (some of you will say I am a part of the problem with so many outsiders but some one is going to do it) There are good and bad people involved in all facets of life. Corruption is everywhere but what is the problem here? Inmates cleaning public roads? Big deal, they should do more of it! It is this kind of po-dunk tattle tale behavior that makes us look uneducated. Native or transplant. This feels like a lame excuse to cause a problem. A costly problem. Here is a good way to sum it up...IF THE WORST THING A GUY CAN BE ACCUSED OF IS HAVING CRIMINALS EARN THEIR KEEP, HE REALLY CANT BE ALL THAT BAD.

My comment was neutral towards Ron Hewett and I in no way insinuated that I thought he was God. Based on what is being reported, I am simply appalled that tax dollars are being spent on an investigation of having inmates work. That is all that is being reported. So your plea to have me "try not to be stupid" is a little over the top. Considering one of us knows the correct use of the words your/you're and to/too, maybe you should rethink replying to someone's thoughts on a subject if you have not clearly read it.

Aparently you have failed to read the numerous articles that have talked about his bank records being requested, logs of employee salaries and work records and his phone records and email records. I suggest you read all of the articles before you continue to make yourself look like you have no idea whats going on

The last I heard the Grand Jury minutes and proceedings are secret. Which would seem to indicate that all the conjecture and rumors about Ron Hewett is purely specalation.

Looks like WWAY's source has made them look foolish again. From the looks of it, these inmates cleaned up a public road, which isn't against the law. It doesn't matter where the public road was or who it benefited, it was still a public road and therefore the Sheriff didn't do anything illegal

I would like to echo the sentiments of a previous poster... Sheriff Hewitt, by alledgly having inmates pick up trash, has not broken and LAWS, they are RULES or REGULATIONS. Regardless of that fact, I lived most of my life in New Hanover County and have seen the crime that goes on unobstructed. I moved to Brunswick County a year ago and by far feel much safer in Brunswick County (you constantly see deputys/officers on patrol/duty). I feel that if having inmates actually work for their keep is the only complaint the powers that be can pin on Sheriff Hewitt then maybe they should find another hobbie. That being said...if Marc Benson should run for Sheriff in Brunswick County, he would have my vote.

Another WTG for WWAY

So lets investigate into this story that WWAY posts for all you bonehead cop haters. "Newschannel 3 gets a "tip" that Hewett orders inmates to do yardwork" FALSE. WWAY's way of saying we have a "creditable" source. Well, look at what kind of sources WWAY has for stories on Hewett. "Newly released documents appear to add truth to the rumor" It shows the rumor is just that, a rumor. It says inmates cleaned the roads leading upto a house on Riverbend which is not anywhere near Hewett's yard. According to county "rules", inmates are used to benefit the public. I read it as "RULES" not laws. Maybe the roads leading up to a house on Riverbend needed to be cleaned. Inmates clean up trash on side of county roads, I see it as benefiting the public. In conclusion, WWAY posts "Rumors" to get you boneheads to watch their news and visit this site to post nothing but trash on anyone who's victim of rumors that they create. Its not news, its smut and we all are the suckers.

This type of thing has been going on for years around here. The only difference is the people who move here from the NORTH won't put up with it. We are increasing as the majority of the population and don't do things the redneck way. Better get used to it, I'm sure more investigations are coming in the future.

Yeah, NYPD is squeeky clean, right? I lived up there for seventeen years, pal. A large portion of my and my ex-wife's family were in NYPD. I could tell you things that the Knapp Commission never got to hear. The corruption within NYPD (and the police departments in Long Island and Northern Jersey) is institutionalized and legend. But the important question is, if you want to make HERE just like UP THERE, why did you come HERE? Why not stay UP THERE if that's the environment you want to live in? One look at your post clearly shows why most natives despise the arrogance of some Northerners. Thankfully, most of us are smart enough to remember why we moved here, and have absolutely no desire to recreate that hell-hole.

Ron Hewett, Public School Coaches marrying their 15 yr old students, recent display of lynching history, Mike Easley's relationships with boat marina in South Port, bugs, swamps......UHHHHHH I'm from the south.....but NOT THAT MUCH SOUTH! Keep the crooked rednecks on that side of the Cape Fear Memorial Bridge (send them Rep. Thomas Wright), and Wilmington will be OK!!!!

do you know what your crime rate is in new hanover? brunswick,for it's size, is not big on crime. once in a while there will be a murder or shoot out but in wilmington/new hanover there is alot!!! everytime i turn on my tv you hear about the crime there.that's why there is so many people moving to brunswick because we are so bad!!
