DOT hopes bridge painting done by year's end

WILMINGTON, NC (WWAY) -- The Cape Fear Memorial Bridge is a fixture in the Port City, but a project to keep the bridge in tip-top condition is not exactly running on schedule.

The bridge was supposed to be repainted by September 30, but it still sits unfinished. The DOT says the contractor was working on another project, and that led to a late start on painting the bridge.

The bridge is draped with sheets, and some folks think it's marring the Wilmington skyline.

"It seems to still be an eyesore, and I hope they can get it done soon," Jennifer Surovuy of Wilmington said. "It's a project that overdue by like a month now at least, right?"

The DOT says it hopes to have the project finished by the end of the year.

bridge tom foolery

Does Saffo have any connection with the contractor that now suddenly can't paint the bridge? Because the people who stand tho make lots of money off of the Skyway Project would love to build the local frustration to crescendo prior to the next meeting. Just a thought....

Why in the world did Wilmington hire a contractor who was so obviously too busy to get the job done in time??? There are so many contractos out there who would have LOVED to have done this job, and on time. Is there no penalty to the contractor for the time overrun? So typical that Wilmington again has no handle on running their city!!
