A victory for school sports in Duplin County.
Duplin County commissioners had proposed new restrictions on school spending that would have prevented the school board from using money to support school athletics and extracurricular programs. Monday night the commissioners voted to lift the restrictions on $850,000 for sports and JROTC programs.
The board of education said instructional spending is still restricted, which could mean layoffs for assistant principals, teachers, and teaching assistants.
The school board and commissioners will hold a meeting by the end of the month to discuss lifting more spending restrictions.
