Durham group warns speeders with paintball guns

Some folks in Durham are warning motorists to slow down in their neighborhood or consider going to a body shop. The group known as Angry Neighbors with Paintball Guns is fed up with what it calls Durham's inability or unwillingness to deal with speeders. So the group has posted these signs throughout the city warning motorists that it is enforcing the speed limit with paintball guns. The group said drivers who do not get off the gas will be shot. "We're trying our hardest to slow down speeders,” said Moe Rivera of Angry Neighbors with Paintball Guns. “The city has been working with us. We want people to be mindful of how fast they're going." Police in Durham are painting a different picture for the group. They said the signs could be a distraction to drivers and that it is a crime to shoot a paintball at a vehicle. People in one neighborhood said they like the signs because they bring attention to the problem.

expert or novice?

As I sit on my front porch with my wife several times a week for the past ten years, we know what the speed limit is on the street we live on. No, we don't know the exact speed vehicles are traveling but, I can bet that we are right when we guess that someone is going way to fast, over the speed limit. Now that being said, I also know that by the time we think the vehicle is going to fast and decide to "shoot it" it is already gone by and we would be "shooting it" in the rear as it is rapidly moving away. I really don't know how accurate or effective a paintball gun would be. So, my wife (current:law enforcement officer) and I (former:U.S.Marine) both know we could hit a vehicle under these circumstances ( with pistol or rifle) but the average person out there doesn't have our training, expertise, and back-ground. So, it is our 'opinion' that not only is it 1)a waste of time to try the paintball method, 2)it is also a futile act of inaccuracy 3) and more importantly, it is a dangerous act to the public in general on so many levels.

next time you drive down the road...

try going the speed limit. My bet is that more people will pass you, going faster than the speed limit, than pace you.

What's Wrong with You People?

Let me get this straight -- you ignore the posted speed limit and speed through a neighborhood, endangering any pets, children, bicyclists, drivers, or anyone who dares get in your way and make you (heaven forbid!) thirty seconds late for wherever you're going. Then, if anyone on the street defends their homes and children with a paint ball, because you are breaking the law, you have the right to shoot them to death?

You don't enforce the law by BREAKING the law....

How would you feel about a police office dragging you out of your car and beating you senseless when you were caught speeding? Would that be okay? No, it would be illegal. I carry a sidearm every day, but I'm also pretty big. So I don't think I'd shoot them....just place their paintball gun where their proctologist would have to retrieve it.

I understand

Ahh, you are of the opinion that two wrongs makes a right? I have a small bridge that crosses the Cape Fear for sale just for you. Shoot at me with a paintball and I will shoot back with either a 9mm, .40 or .45 depending on which caliber I decided to carry that day.

Get a camera

Get a camera, get a radar gun. Get enough of it on film of people speeding, work with the police department. Vigilante justice is illegal. If someone shot me or my car with a paintball, I will defend my self. some paintball guns look like real weapons. You reap what you sow.

Shows just how many speeders

Shows just how many speeders are out there huh? Where are the cops?????

Shoot at a car, go to jail

I'm not sure who these idiotic people think they are, but vigilante justice has no place in modern society. If you want to combat speeders, go buy a radar gun and a good quality video camera and start catching them in the act. Just because you THINK they are speeding doesn't mean they really are. Besides, if someone with an expensive car gets their paint job or custom upgrades ruined by paintballs there is likely to be a huge lawsuit (which the person with the car will win), or a paintballer dead from shooting a drug dealers or gang members car or something similar. Even worse, what if someone was driving with their windows open and the paintball went into the car and hit the driver in the eye or face, or their wife or young child. The result would be huge medical bills, a serious car accident or even the death of the driver. Secondly firing anything at a moving vehicle, paintball, rock, snowball etc, is a crime and punishable with sentences far worse than a speeder would get. I agree with Guest. I have a valid CCW and would be justified in protecting myself with my sidearm if I felt threatened. You better believe I will respond if I see someone hiding behind a tree pointing the muzzle of a gun at me. There is no way to know in that split second whether that is someone with a paintball gun, pellet gun, air rifle or a real firearm. These vigilantes need to grow a few brain cells and think about what they are starting here.

If some idiot shot at my car

If some idiot shot at my car the next thing that would happen is their arrest for vandelism. I would definately have them in court.

Idiotic

This is idiotic.. I cary a loaded weapon at all times.. Call me paranoid.. Call me safe.. Whaterev.... There are many others just like myself... If someone raises a gun up to me or my car, I think I would react, see the weapon, and open fire... Evening hours.. You would make out the outline of the weapon and may not be able to tell its a paintball gun.... You could mistake the weapon for a real gun.. I think holding up a paintball gun to someone... WOuld run the risk of someone getting accidently shot or killed... Bad idea people...

I say "Go for It" and color

I say "Go for It" and color their worlds to no end. If the Police can't deter these speed drivers from breaking the law, several trips to the car wash just might! Of course, if this happened in Wilmington, there would be a shortage of paint balls in a matter of hours!!!!

yeah right

Let someone shoot my car with a paintball gun and see what happens!! They don't have radar guns, they are not cops. Just because they 'think' you could be speeding.... There would be knuckle sammys all around....lol or a paint ball gun stuck where the sun don't shine!!

Hey

Well, the only upside to this is they got all the citizens (read: criminals) in Durham to start using paintball guns. In all seriousness, if you shot my car with a paintball gun for speeding, you better be a fast runner, and have a radar gun, because this is going to get someone hurt.

will be great!

So these people went to school to properly judge the speed of a moving vehicle while they are static? I can't wait for somebody to shoot back with a real gun.
