Durham mayor Bill Bell backs Obama for presidency

DURHAM (AP) -- Durham Mayor Bill Bell says he is endorsing Illinois Sen. Barack Obama in his bid for the White House. Bell announced his support for the fellow Democrat in an interview with The Association Press on Thursday morning. He plans to formally declare his decision when he introduces Obama to supporters at a fundraising event in Durham on Thursday afternoon. The Bull City is not far from Chapel Hill - the hometown of Obama rival and former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards. Bell says while Edwards would make a great president, he particularly supports Obama for his foresight and judgment. He notes that Obama has opposed the Iraq War from the outset. Edwards voted for the Iraq War as a senator but has since called that vote a mistake. (Copyright 2007 by The Associated Press. All Rights Reserved.)
