Earlier start for schools moving to the head of the class

READ MORE:
State lawmakers have moved one step closer to changing the start times for schools in North Carolina. Legislation just passed the House that would allow districts to start the academic year two weeks earlier, as early as August 8th. The bill is on its way to the senate. WWAY spoke to school officials in Brunswick County about the proposed changes. "Certainly we do live in an area that depends a lot on tourism. We have also had some pretty successful year round schools where parents enjoyed the opportunity of having breaks at other times than just the summer vacation. So there are pros and cons and we are not going to please everyone we will go by the legislation,” said Faye Nelson. In 2004, the legislature passed a bill allowing schools to start no earlier than August 25th. That bill was backed by the tourism industry. The same folks opposed to pushing the start date earlier, saying it will interfere with students’ summer jobs, and family vacations.

law for opening of school

Its october, what happened to the law. was it changed?

early start date

I believe the law states 180 days are required for a school year.. I sure hope that means that we will get out two weeks early then. I enjoy having my summers off so that I may spend time with my family and friends.

So, this legislation would

So, this legislation would "allow districts to start the academic year two weeks earlier, as early as August 8th." Does that mean that they wouldn't have to? Maybe NH County could just keep the same schedule.

Great Idea

I think this is a great idea, this will align the public schools with an academic year very similar to universities. One of the biggest benefits to this will be completing the fall semester before Christmas break so students aren't left hanging over the long break and then being forced to perform well on exams in mid January. By finishing the semester before they leave for Christmas and starting the Spring semester when they return in January, recall will be dramatically improved and test scores will surely rise. Seniors will also be adjusted to a college academic year when they start college in the fall. Win-win for all involved the way I see it.

Early to school

This is so not right. Parents should not send thier children to school until the Tuesday after Labor Day and Parents in Leland should not buy uniforms either. This is supposed to be the United States of America........But more and more we are getting to be like Germany and Russia were. Are we going to be the enemey next??????????????

Exactly

Why would we want our kids to be like Germany? I mean just because most European kids are incredibly far ahead of ours in test scores ...why would we want that? Who needs intelligence and a good education when you can have summer vacation!

eary school

I don't understand how we can afford to start school early when we can't afford to pay our teachers, we are going to need more money for gas for the bus, more money for electric bills, and more money for lunch, I do believe someone has not thought this process out.

What

So parents get no say in this??? I was never polled or asked if I am oppose or for this change!! Has any one else??? When do we parents get a say in our children s lives???

re: A say in your child's life

Well if you want a say in your child's life, home school them. Then the choice is all yours! Your children or anyone else's for that matter do not have to partake of the free education they receive. You say that you have had no say in the matter, I would be willing to bet these issues are discussed at a thing called school board meetings. If you attend them then you will have time to speak about these matters.

Free?

Free? Who said our children's education is free. We pay dearly for our childrens education (unless maybe you live somewhere where there are no taxes).
