The deadline has passed for New Hanover County employees looking to cash in on the early retirement package. New Hanover county commissioners offered long-time county employees a severance package if they retired early as part of their budget cut plan. Employees had until 5:00pm Friday to decide. After county leaders see how many employees opted for early retirement, they'll know how many involuntary layoffs are necessary. They expect to make that announcement by March 9th. “There are a lot of department heads and supervisors with twenty years in, and it's a tough decision to have to make in especially with the economic times the way they are,” said NHC Public Information Officer Mark Boyer. Sheriff Sid Causey announced his retirement earlier this week after 39 years with New Hanover County. He said the retirement package came at the right time for him and his family.
