During any holiday, people tend to hit the highways to spend time with loved ones, but with gas prices reaching new heights, many are deciding to stay put. With gas prices inching ever closer to the four dollar mark, people are thinking twice about making a trip for the holiday weekend. According to AAA, in 2007, statewide gas prices averaged around $2.61 during the easter holiday. This year, gas prices average around $3.28, a 67 cent jump. Despite the high prices, many people say they won't be putting the brakes on for spending time with family. According to the highway patrol, this year's holiday traffic won't be anything out of the ordinary. Sargent J.O. Holmes said, "Instead of going on long vacations people are opting to go to closer destinations and wilmington fits that bill, and even though gas prices are going up and I think we're seeing that it's not affecting the traffic a whole lot."
