Edwards calls on Democrats to bar lobbyists' money

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards was the party's top fundraising organizations to stop accepting money from federal lobbyists.

The former North Carolina senator already has adopted that policy for his campaign.

Edwards' campaign yesterday called on Democratic presidential rival Barack Obama to co-sign a letter to party leaders criticizing the connection between political donations and Washington's lobbying industry.

Edwards says there are now more than 60 lobbyists for every member of Congress. He says the system is clearly rigged against the people.

Edwards is distancing himself from the party establishment. A spokeswoman for the Democratic National Committee wouldn't talk about the proposal.

Obama aides would not say if he would sign onto Edwards' effort.
