Edwards: Environmental work can mean manufacturing jobs

CLEVELAND (AP) -- Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards says millions of manufacturing jobs can result from collaboration between blue-collar industries and environmental projects.

The former North Carolina senator told a union political meeting in Cleveland yesterday the Blue Green Alliance can create up to two million new manufacturing jobs to replace some jobs that have been lost.

The Blue Green Alliance was formed last year by the United Steelworkers of America and the Sierra Club to promote job creation and work on environmental initiatives. Those programs include global warming and development of solar and wind power.

Edwards says the United States would benefit from taking the lead in developing fuel-efficient vehicles.
