Edwards looks ahead after candidacy

CHAPEL HILL (AP) -- It appears former Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards plans to remain in public life. The former North Carolina senator withdrew from his second bid for the White House yesterday, saying rivals Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama have agreed to make ending poverty central to their campaign. Edwards adviser Kate Michelman says she thinks he will continue to play a strong political role. She says Edwards is just moving to the next phase of his life. Edwards must decide on that next phase and the role North Carolina will play in his future. His immediate focus will be on his family. Edwards is the father of three children, and his wife, Elizabeth, is fighting a recurrence of breast cancer. He did say yesterday he doesn't want to be a vice presidential candidate again.
