Edwards wants probe of high gas prices

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Democratic presidential hopeful John Edwards says a wave of mergers in the oil industry should be investigated to see what impact they've had on soaring gasoline prices.

The former North Carolina senator is suggesting a Justice Department investigation during a campaign swing in California.

Edwards' campaign provided an outline of his energy plan to The Associated Press. Edwards plans to complain today about the oil industry and what he calls "anticompetitive actions."

The campaign stop in Silicon Valley is also expected to include a plan to reduce oil imports and make the nation almost petroleum-free within a generation.

The plan cites Exxon Mobil as a company that owns every step in the production process, allowing them to foreclose competition.
