Elderly couple loses home in fire

READ MORE: Elderly couple loses home in fire
WILMINGTON -- An elderly New Hanover County couple is homeless tonight after an early morning fire. They weren't there when it happened, but they lost almost everything. The fire happened around 3:30 Wednesday morning. The house is on Grissom Road, right off Myrtle Grove Road. The fire started in the kitchen area and the cause is still under investigation. Crews put out the fire within ten minutes of arriving on the scene. The couple -- in their 70s -- was out of town when it happened. With many people going out of town for the holidays, there are some things to remember when you leave. Make sure all appliances that emit heat are off. That includes your dryer -- don't trust that it will turn itself off. Don't turn your heat completely off, but it's a good idea to turn it down. The couple has relatives in the area to stay with for the time being... They have another building on their property with an apartment and office in it that wasn't affected and fire officials say they will most likely stay there eventually.
