Embattled fire chief fired

READ MORE: Embattled fire chief fired

OAK ISLAND, NC (WWAY) -- John House is out. House had been the Oak Island Fire Chief since 2005. He says town manager Jerry Walters offered him the opportunity to resign, but House refused. Walters couldn't comment on the firing because it's a personnel matter.

In 2008, house blew a point-one-four during a highway patrol checkpoint - that's almost twice the legal limit. He was found guilty of DWI, but Brunswick County prosecutors bungled the appeal forcing a judge to throw out the case. The DA's office is appealing that dismissal.

House was fired as the town investigates claims of sexual harassment against the fire department by a former female employee. Walters would not say whether that had anything to do with the firing.

fire cheif

john is a good man and did anyone think that he has a famliy and is a human being just like the rest of us and makes misteaks. He should of gotten suspended NOT fired. and they should have waited untill after the trial. i do not think they should have takin the word of that women they should have looked into the situation more. She really just wanted his job! he has always done a great job and was a great leader! now is not sure what he is going to do to take care of his family so i hope the OKI "leaders" are happy! who ever is above them should look into taking there jobs and see what a "great" job there doing!

i think he deserves his job back!!!!!!!!

My two cents

Although House was not fired for the DWI, he should have been the day after his arrest. Court proceedings have nothing to do with personnel matters. As a fire chief, he was charged with running a department who's responsible for protecting property from fire, handling medical emergencies and victims of traffic crashes. All too often, these crashes are, guess what, alcohol related. So to allow him to stay tells each and every one of the firefighters in that agency, it is OK to go out and drive drunk. That is not the example the chief should be setting. He plead in District Court and appealed to superior where the ADA messed up. The DA's office appealed that. Its not over yet. It doesnt matter to me if he was fired for the DWI or alledged sexual harrassment, he was fired.

It is bad for the department to have to deal with issues like that. The chief's DWI and the allegations of sexual harrassment give the entire dept a black eye. Sadly, there are women in all branches of public service who will yell harrassment if things dont go their way. That makes it hard for those women who actually do their job. I dont know what the allegations are and don't care, just stating a fact that things like that happen.

Sexual harassment.......this

Sexual harassment.......this is getting old. Women want to be treated like men so when the invade turf that has traditionally been handled for men, they need to act like a man. Suck it up, get on with the program and quit whining.

In another media outlet

the disgraced chief threatens lawsuits. Good Luck. Sadly, there are enough free wheeling vultures available, there will be one or more ready to undertake the case.

Former Chief, you might want to go look at unemployment benefits and other entitlements. Typically it takes 2 years of discovery, document review, and pre-trial statements before you get to trial.

Let's see, no one can deny you registered .14 on the breathalizer. Regardless of the charge being set aside due to a court proceedural issue, that alone warrents terminiation.

Do you honestly think the insurance carrier will allow you to operate a town vehicle or direct firefighters at the scene of a fire.

Best advice, Chief -- go softly into the night and hope this blows over so you can seek another job in 2 or 3 years. In the interim, McDonalds & Food Lion are hiring.

Chief House

Chief House was not terminated for the DWI for several reasons. Whatever they were, charges were dropped. That should have been the end of the matter. The allegations by the female firefighter are just allegations made by a female firefighter who has job-hopped because of the problems she causes at each station she lands at. No one at atleast 2 fire departments was saddened to see her leave. This was investigated but no lawsuit or settlement has been made. Maybe with all the other issues going on, the town manager, his assistant, and a few others shoulld be dismissed for failing to impress with their performances.

Its clear your one sided....

With your comments titled Chief House, Its clear your for him if your not him. Everyone should be open minded and look at the whole picture here. We have a public official that was charged and blew what a 0.14 while driving a car...Yes it was dismissed for the ADA's negligence, but is being refiled...We know whats going to happen to that..he will be found guilty with all the media coverage. Dosen't matter at all if the charge was dismissed..he still was DRIVING DRUNK. I would be so embarrased with myself, they wouldn't have to fire me. And then to get on the phone on TV and say.."I was charged and I got out it, that's all it is to it".

Your clearly on his side when you talk trash about the female fire fighter and must know its obvious that you have worked with her. If you were true to yourself and not being a pom pas, arrangement, self center, moron, you would be evenly sided here. Your hoping people will read your article and side with you not knowing all the facts.

I'm sure you do not speak for every one at the last two stations she worked at to make the comment that they are not saddened to see her leave. Stop kidding yourself and stop spouting off at what you obviously know nothing about. The truth always comes out, and I'm sure in this real world this will come out.

It seems that when a woman enters a mans world there is always some men whole fell that they should not be there. We are in the 21st century and the bra burning days have been long gone, but its obvious in some smaller out of the way places, they did not get the memos.

It's called

failing to lead with a high moral and ethical standard.

The CEO of Hewlett Packard faced some allegations which were fully investigated and found to be not true. Yet during the investigation, he realized his performance had not been of the high moral or ethical standards his position required. He realized his ability to lead by example was tarnished. He did the right thing; he was not asked to resign but he did.

Too bad the Chief seems more focused on a few dollars then on the fact he did register a .14 when stopped.

The fact remains

he registered a .14. Let the Town's insurance carrier find out, and the town loses its insurance; goes with a higher premium OR he stops driving.

My comments made no mention of any other allegation.

He does not deny blowing a .14. That's called poor leadership
