DURHAM (AP) -- Durham District Attorney Mike Nifong reported to jail today to serve a 24-hour sentence for contempt.
The former prosecutor is spending a day in jail for his handling of the now-discredited rape case against three Duke University lacrosse players.
Nifong resigned after being disbarred. A judge found Nifong in contempt last week for lying to the court during a hearing in the case last fall.
Superior Court Judge W. Osmond Smith the Third could have sentenced Nifong to as many as 30 days in jail and given him a fine as high as $500.
Nifong would not talk to reporters when he arrived. Some supporters carried signs of support. A few hecklers were also there, one shouting "Justice works."
One Duke team member not charge, Tom Clute, snapped pictures as Nifong walked into the jail.
