OAK ISLAND -- A Wilmington man died over the weekend after an unexplained explosion in Oak Island. The accident happened Saturday afternoon off old bridge road right before you get to Oak Island and at this time, the details of what happened are still a little sketchy. Investigators think a propane tank in this dumpster somehow ignited and exploded. John Kelly Wicklin -- one of the employees at the business where the dumpster is kept -- was killed in the accident. Oak Island Fire Chief John House says he doesn't know why Wicklin was near the dumpster or what he was doing at the time of the explosion. Monday firefighters were back out on the scene scoping the area near the accident to try and find remnants of a propane tank, but nothing turned up. House said, "They've been located up to a mile away in instances like this before, this thing could be in the Intracoastal Waterway, it could be laying in someone's back yard." House says he may never find the propane tank. If you live in the area where the explosion happened, House is asking you to call the fire department or if you notice anything which may resemble a tank near your home. No foul play is suspected. House says the accident could have been prevented, however, if the person who threw the tank away had done so properly. That means taking it to a store that sells propane tanks, so they can properly dispose of it.
