Holiday shopping season is in full swing, and there's a chance you've seen an email going around warning shoppers to use up gift cards for retailers that are closing stores around the country. Gift cards are a big part of holiday shopping. This year, consumers will spend an estimated $25 billion on holiday gift cards. But some retailers are having a tough time, and closing some of their stores. We checked out the email's truth for some Wilmington stores on the list. Ann Taylor is closing. Fiction. No Wilmington stores are shutting down. A company spokesperson said the store is faring well across the state. Eddie Bauer is closing. Fiction. Linens-n-Things is shutting down all of its stores. Fact. JC Penney is shutting down. Fiction. It is staying open in Independence Mall. Lowe's Hardware is closing. Fiction. The Gap is closing. Fiction. It is staying open in Independence Mall. And Wilson's Leather is closing. Fact. It has already closed its doors in Independence Mall. Some retailers, like J.Jill, are even posting messages on their websites, letting people know there is no concern about buying a gift card from them this holiday season. If you are buying a gift card for someone out of state, it is a good idea to call their local store, to make sure it is not one of those that are shutting down.
