Factors involved in Brunswick County school closings and delays

The decision to close or delay school is not an easy one. There are actually several factors that have to be taken into consideration. The Brunswick County School Board works closely with Brunswick County Emergency Management and constantly gets weather updates. The superintendent of Brunswick County Schools, Katie McGee said road conditions are also an important factor. “We make our decision based on hazardous road conditions. The buses have to go a long ways. It is not like the city streets in Wilmington. It's a lot of country roads. We have a large number of bridges in the county.” McGee also said about 1,500 automated phone calls went out to Brunswick County parents and school staff around 8:00 Sunday night to update them about Monday morning's delay.
