READ MORE: Family and friends mourn death of Wilmington Man
WILMINGTON -- They gathered on the 100 block of Kilarney Drive Sunday to remember 19-year-old Wilmington resident William Ray Smith Jr. B.J., as most called him, died less than 24 hours before on the same block. "He didn't do nothing," said the victim's friend who identified himself as Alex B. "Somebody hit him with the glass, it cut his neck, and he was bleeding. And I tried to stop the blood and it kept coming out.” According to police reports a fight broke out during a party around 8 p.m. Saturday evening. Minutes later Smith died from wounds to the neck and face from a shattered beer bottle. "I heard his last breath last night," Alex B. said. "He was squeezing my hand the whole time like, 'I'm dying.'" Last night 34-year-old Wilmington resident Meredith Andrew Skipper turned himself in to Wilmington Police. He’s been charged with involuntary manslaughter. "This whole incident is a terrible thing for our whole entire family and we want to ask everybody to just pray for him," said the victim’s younger brother Alex. "He's in a better place but we miss him."
