Fayetteville man charged in fatal weekend car accident

A tractor-trailer driver has been charged in a Saturday morning car accident that killed an Onslow County volunteer Firefighter and Sheriff's Deputy on Highway 17. Investigators said 51 year old Robert Kornegay of Fayetteville was driving a tractor-trailer that struck and killed Deputy Steve Boehm and Firefighter Gene Thomas. The two men were directing traffic around a controlled burn near Camp Lejeune and were assisting with three minor wrecks when the tractor trailer hit and killed them. Kornegay faces two charges of misdemeanor death by vehicle and one charge of exceeding a safe speed. He was released from jail Saturday.
