Felon Facebook fan for sheriff candidate

READ MORE: Felon Facebook fan for sheriff candidate

He's been keeping a low profile ever since being released from prison last month, but former Brunswick County Sheriff Ron Hewett has made an appearance on Facebook endorsing a candidate who's running for his old job.

Tim Daniels is a state trooper running for Sheriff of Brunswick County as a Republican. So you might be surprised to hear that one of his many Facebook fans is a high-profile Democrat: Hewett.

In a post on Daniels's Facebook page, Hewett writes, "I knew Tim as a child, loved him as a teen.... and now support him as the next Sheriff of Brunswick County.... Thank God I am free and can endorse a 'man of honor' to carry the flag that was robbed from me."

Before going to prison for obstruction of justice, Hewett was an extremely popular sheriff for 14 years. He still has a big following, but he's also a convicted felon, so we asked Daniels if he was reluctant to accept his endorsement.

"I accept all citizens' support in Brunswick County," Daniels said. "I'm a Brunswick County native, and I would expect the Hewetts and all the other Brunswick County natives that really know me to support me."

Sheriff John Ingram served under Hewett for more than a decade and was one of more than a dozen deputies subpoenaed to testify about the sheriff's behavior. Deputies said Hewett did everything from coming to crime scenes drunk to having them do his campaign work while on the clock.

"Former Sheriff Hewett has served his time and been out," Ingram said. "I wish him nothing but a good life, and whether he supports Tim Daniels or whoever, that's certainly his right."

There is just one more day to file, but right now, Daniels and Ingram are the only ones running for Brunswick County Sheriff, and they're both Republicans. If no one else files, that means the race will likely be decided in the primary election May 4, and voters will only be eligible to participate in the sheriff's primary if they are registered as a Republican or unaffiliated.

Ingram Vs Daniels

I have had to deal with both Mr. Ingram and Mr. Daniels in my job. (Nothing dealing with law enforcement). I have spoken to both of these men on the phone in my job. Mr. Daniels was calling on behalf of the N.C. Highway Patrol he was working. Mr. Ingram was calling to take care of some personal business. When I spoke to Mr. Daniels I could hardly understand what he was asking for and could not get him to stop joking, laughing, and carrying on with people around him long enough to give him the information he was requesting from me! Mr. Ingram however was very respectful and professional. This decided my vote when I found out they were both running. Mr. Ingram is repectful and professional even outside of the role of Sheriff. Mr. Daniels can't even act like a mature adult when on duty. I sure don't want someone as childish as the man on the other end of the phone was. VOTE INGRAM FOR BRUNSWICK COUNTY SHERIFF! I did!!

Stolen Signs

Before you say ugly hurtful things about people you should know what you are saying is the truth! Maybe if you go to the DOT in Shallotte you will find some of those "STOLEN" signs. If they were not put in places they didn't belong I bet alot of them would still be there! LOL! People are always ready to cast stones. I don't think He is without sin....

Tim Daniels running for Brunswick County Sheriff

Mr. Daniels is still having problems with people stealing and tearing up his signs. This is ridiculous. I know politics are dirty but you would think the the citizens of Brunswick Co. had a little more civility. I guess not!!

I have a question. Why are

I have a question. Why are all the Tim Daniels signs being stolen? Can someone share some light on that. I'm a proud supporter of Salt and put sign around the Brunswick County area and everyone i've placed down seem to have been moved. And to comment on guest12 about signs being on Mt. Pisgah in front of a known drug area or house or whatever they said. If i can recall, I'm thinking felon earn there rights back for the last election. And how would anyone know about known drug areas and houses if they haven't went up there or through there for there own personal business. Come on get with the program people, its all about whos the better man for the job.

signs

Has anybody ever thought that their is other people in Mr. Hewett's family that could have put them signs out there.Because if you look on his facebook, his wife and son both support Mr. Daniels too.

Sheriff

I would like to respond to guest 12's comment. If you look carefully,Sheriff Ingram's signs are in drug areas too,and for you to know a drug dealers house ,then that makes it look like you are buying from him or her.In this county probally more than 70% of it has some kind of illegal drugs in it,so It doesn't matter how many sheriffs they are, drugs will never be taken out of this county. So most likely, all the politicans signs are near drug activities. So i think the ones who point out black neighborhoods as drug areas, they are racial profiling about the areas in general ,because i know people that live in these areas that doesn't mess with drugs,so to you it means that because there is people in that area that are messing with drugs, then that automatically means the whole area is a drug community. You need to look closely to the area of where Sheriff Ingram is from ,there is drugs there too(Ash,NC).So i think Mr. Daniels would make a great sheriff in this county and he has all of my family votes and i am in the process of getting him a whole lot more votes.

I FIND IT INTERESTING THAT

I FIND IT INTERESTING THAT IF YOU RIDE DOWN MT PISGAH RD YOU SEE TIM DANIELS SIGNS AT THE ENTRANCE TO CEDAR GROVE, ONE OF THE BIGGEST DRUG COMMUNITIES IN BRUNSWICK COUNTY, AND RIGHT ACROSS THE STREET IN ONE OF THE CRACK DEALERS YARD. THAT TELLS ME THAT INGRAM AND HIS GUYS ARE DOING THEIR JOB AND THE CRACK HEADS DON'T LIKE IT!!

There are a total of TWO

There are a total of TWO signs. There should be more down the entire road. Ingram wasn't sheriff when the crack heads were busted a few years back. Hewett was.

really? because i ride down

really? because i ride down mt pisgah everyday and there more than two, and for your other statement you havent paid attention to the drug round ups at all...

100% RIGHT

They are trying to make the sheriff department look bad, They think its bad now wait IF DANIELS GET SHERIFF,PEOPLE WAKE UP NOW BEFORE OUR COUNTY GETS INFESTED IN DRUGS.ITS NOT ABOUT HEWETT ANYONE,ITS ABOUT WHO WILL HELP KEEEP OUT COUNTY CLEAN.

Salt vs Ingram

The Grand Ole Party will be having JUDAS on heir side either way!!!! I sure would not want to live or depend on either of them. "You have got to STAND for something or you'll fall for anything"!!! People you better open your eye's and using start using your heads!!!

Criminals

Hewett did his time and can back whoever he wants. Mr. Daniels does not have any say in this and should not be penalized for Hewetts choice of candidates.
Maybe we should all stop watching sports because a majority of these athletes have criminal pasts.
If everybody in Brunswick County gave up their friends because of a criminal record, Brunswick County would be a lonely place.
We need a Sheriff who gives recognition to his workers not to himself.

We already have him in

We already have him in office now.

Why Timothy Daniels for Sheriff over John Ingram?

John Ingram was and is still a part of the good ol' boys club that runs ramped in the Brunswick County Sheriff's office. We need a Sheriff that isn't a part of that "You scratch my back I scratch yours crap"

WHICH IS EXACTLY WHY TIM

WHICH IS EXACTLY WHY TIM DANIELS DOES NOT NEED TO BE SHERIFF..CAUSE "YOU SCRATCH MY BACK I SCRATCH YOURS CRAP" IS WHAT YOU WILL HAVE, INGRAM DOESN'T PLAY THAT WAY

I don't know nothing about

I don't know nothing about the good ol'boys club, but I do know hewett and salt was always good ol'boys club, when it came to longwood drugs.I have children and grandchildrn live in Brunswick county,Plese vote for one that will clean up the drugs here. READ The comment about salt daniels, they is no way.

i honestly belive that

i honestly belive that either will do fine in office and everyone has their flaws but we're all human and anyone that can't actually vote needs to keep their opinions to themselves..

Question....

what's wrong with re-electing Sherrif Ingram ? Does he HAVE to be replaced? What's up wit that ?

Ronnie

Come on! Not more Ronnie Hewett in the news.I so hoped we were done with this man! His statement that he was robbed of his position only shows he has learned nothing from his conviction or from his "short time" in prison.
I for one will never vote for anyone endorsed by Ronnie.
BTW you can block any one from your friends list on facebook.

Ms. McAdams.....

Ms. McAdams: your obvious slant on this story is one of the reasons I no longer watch WWAY-TV3. Anyone running for public office is allowed to have anyone they want endorsing them. If that individual is a convicted felon, so be it. That is THEIR choice. By the way, have you ever heard the phrase.."there but for the grace of God go I?"

voting

Mr Hewett is a convicted felon and cannot vote so what is all the fuss about. If you really believe that Daniels can hire him back, I HAVE A BRIDGE for you to buy.
Political sabotage is what killed our last President election, lets not let that happen again.
Still waiting for CHANGE and thats all I have left in my pockets is CHANGE.

vote

thats where you are wrong.felons can vote. they cant have a gun. and they cant run for office. but they can vote.research before you make statements please. you know what happens when you assume.

CHECK AND READ BEFORE COMMENTING.

As I stated MR Hewett being a convicted felon can not vote in this election.
NC states that ex felons can have their citizenship rights automatically restored after they have FULLY completed their sentence, including probation, parole and post release supervision and they must re-register to vote.
This being said, Hewett can apply for his voting rights to be restored when he completes his full sentence which happens to be around January 2012.

So as I stated Hewett can not vote in this election, its that simple even you can understand that.

Felons can run for office.

Felons can run for office. Check your facts.

I think you're imagining that slant

McAdams has developed into one of the best local reporters and anchors I've seen in my life. For the life of me, I can't see where she has any "slant" in this story at all. She simply asked Daniels how he felt about Hewett's endorsement. That's a legitimate question, and I think he gave a good answer.

Way back when.....

Back in 2001, I stopped Mr. Daniels for running a stop sign as he was coming out of the quarters. I sure hope he has matured since then. Mr. Daniels showed me that he was an off duty Trooper and proceed with all kinds of profanities stating that he did not run the stop sign and I needed to quit pooping (I censored his words) on him. I tried to explain to Mr. Daniels that myself and the other two deputies that were with me saw him. He stated that I could have had 20 deputies that saw it, but it didn’t matter cause he said he didn’t run it. Now I do not write law enforcement for minor stuff like stop signs, but I was ordered that if we didn’t write a state citation I was to write a “WARNING” citation. Well when I returned back to Mr. Daniels vehicle to give him his copy of the “WARNING” citation, he realized that he thought I stopped him for the stop sign at 904 (which he did stop at) and not the one coming out of the trailer park. I thought everything was good to go. Well that next morning I had my butt chewed (understatement) by Ronnie. Seems that Mr. Daniels was so upset and sick because he got a “WARNING” ticket that he couldn’t sleep that night. I thought he couldn’t sleep cause he was on his way to ride with Trooper Gore when I stopped him, but I guess I was wrong. Ronnie proceed to tell me that “Salt” was a good person who has had a bad life. According to Ronnie Mr. Daniels relatives have been on the other side of Law Enforcement. Not sure if that is true or not, but the next morning I was given my walking papers. Now I haven’t read Mr. Daniels promises, mainly because I don’t live there anymore, but I hope they don’t include Professionalism and Ethic’s. I will say this. If the citizens of Brunswick County want another Ronnie Hewitt than by all means vote for Mr. Daniels. You’ll get the same service that Ronnie gave you. I will feel bad for those deputies though.

Way back then...

Thanks for the info "Nick".....If this is true, I certainly hope that "professionalism" and "Ethics" isnt a promise either...

I also heard that Ronnie

I also heard that Ronnie ordered his deputies to stay out of Longwood all the time because he did not want them writing any tickets there so he could get the Longwood vote. If Salt is sheriff, we will have this mess going on again. Thank goodness Ingram does not care about this and actually lets the officers do their job all over the county. I would rather be protected and know the drug activity was being watched and taken care of by the officers instead of being swept under the rug!

Trooper Daniels

I was there, it was racially motivated and that was the reason you got fired. Hewett knew this, stuck up for the man and apologized for the bigoted behavior of his deputies.

What's your candidate up to besides covering up a race that landed a deputy in the hospital on life support, what's he up to besides covering up a TB outbreak, in the jail?

Personally I kind of understand a man that gets upset when called a racial slur by a fellow officer.

Just remembered something. I

Just remembered something. I deny useing racial slurs. Now I have no way of proving that and if you really know me you knew me and my past, you would know that I can't use them. But I may be wrong on this and if I am please correct me. But wasn't your buddy Ronnie recorded using racial slurs? If I'm wrong let me know. But I'm pretty sure I'm right.
