Film about Pea Island rescuers to be shown in NC

READ MORE:

RALEIGH, N.C. -- A documentary about the black crew members who manned the Pea Island Life-Saving Station on North Carolina's Outer Banks will be screened at the state Museum of History.

The movie titled "Rescue Men: The Story of the Pea Island Life Savers" will be screened at the Raleigh museum at 7 p.m. Friday, followed by a question-and-answer session with the producer.

The 60-minute film tells the story of the rescuers, including how they saved every man on board the E.S. Newman, a three-masted schooner that ran aground on Oct. 11, 1896. They were led by Capt. Richard Etheridge, a former slave and Civil War veteran.

A bronze statue of Etheridge will be unveiled on Saturday in Manteo.
